Determining Hearing Sensitivity by B.E.R.A

Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry (B.E.R.A) is an objective test used to measure the sensitivity of hearing and as well as determine auditory pathway function from the ear to the brainstem. Unlike conventional behavioral tests, B.E.R.A does not need active response and is beneficial for infants, children, and other individuals who are unable to have conventional tests that are mainstream in hearing exams. The test measures the electrical responses generated from stimulation of the auditory nerve and brainstem to sound stimuli. The results are represented as waveforms, hence, interpreted to contain elements of activity in the auditory nerve and brainstem.

B.E.R.A Tests and Levels of Hearing Loss

Normal Hearing (0-25 dB)

The waveforms appear within normal limits and indicate an intact audiological pathway with healthy hearing sensitivity.

Mild Hearing Loss (26-40 dB)

Slight delays may be seen in responses or their amplitudes may be reduced. Their patients will frequently complain about, for example, sounding muffled in loud environments and would miss some, particularly soft, sounds being developed in children.

Moderate Hearing Loss (41-55 dB)

B.E.R.A shows significantly delayed waveforms. Speech clarity, language learning, and everyday communication may be impacted by this degree.

Moderate-Severe Hearing Loss (56-70 dB)

Waveforms tend to disappear or become weaker at lower intensities. Patients will miss most conversation sounds and require hearing assistance aids.

Severe Hearing Loss (71-90 dB)

Only clear responses are recorded at higher sound intensities from B.E.R.A. Normal communications are very difficult to maintain without powerful hearing aids.

Profound Hearing Loss (<90 dB)

Maximum intensity may not elicit any response from B.E.R.A or show minimal responses. Cochlear implants or advanced hearing devices usually can be recommended as forms of effective rehabilitation.
