Evaluating Inner Ear Function

Otoacoustic emissions (OAE) is a non-invasive procedure to evaluate cochlear (inner ear) function. The OAE measures sound waves produced by the outer hair cells in the cochlea when the outer hair cells are activated by sound. The OAE findings indicate that the cochlea is responding to sound and make it possible to identify hearing problems in a very early stage. Test results are presented in the form of a graph demonstrating which emitted sounds were strong or not across different frequencies.

Normal Cochlear Function

OAE responses were present for all frequencies with normal outer hair cell function.

Mild Dysfunction

There were reduced emissions meaning there is reduced outer hair function. Hearing sensitivity may have been affected.

Moderate-severe Dysfunction

A decreasing or absence of emissions from OAE suggests there may be serious obsticles to global cochlear function. Further testing may be necessary.

Severe Dysfunction

The majority OAE signals were absent which likely indicates severe cochlear dysfunction and significant issues hearing in daily life.

Profound Dysfunction

No OAE responses were evoked which bring us to our final conclusion, and that means there is profound cochlear dysfunction damage and the possibility for advanced levels of intervention like hearing aids or cochlear implantation warrants consideration.
