Impedance audiometry is an objective test in which the evaluator determines the function of the middle ear and the mobility of the ear drum (tympanic membrane). The test evaluates the status of the tympanic membrane and the ossicles. Tympanometric data illustrates the responsiveness of the eardrum to changes in air pressure. The status of the middle ear is graphed on a tympanogram - a plot of compliance and changes in eardrum pressure.

Normal Middle Ear Function

Tympanogram shows normal eardrum compliance and middle ear pressure indicative of normal function of the middle ear.

Mild Dysfunction

Minimal changes in eardrum compliance suggest minimal fluid changes possibly being present or early middle ear dysfunction changes.

Moderate Dysfunction

Decreased eardrum movement or middle ear pressure changes that do influence sound conduction. This may benefit from medical treatment.

Moderate-Severe Dysfunction

Stiffness of the middle ear or increased fluid is occurring that can reduce hearing efficiency. On a tympanogram it usually indicates a need for medical treatment or intervention.

Severe Dysfunction

Markedly abnormal tympanogram with significant alteration in middle ear structure that greatly affects hearing and requires prompt medical care.

Profound Dysfunction

Extremely abnormal tympanogram with greater middle ear pathology which usually requires surgical treatment or aggressive management.
