Newborn Hearing Screening

Newborn hearing screening is a quick, non-invasive test used to check hearing in young babies. The newborn hearing screening assesses the auditory system's response to sound stimuli. The outcome of the screening determines whether the baby's hearing is functioning within normal limits or is indicative of further testing. In addition, results can be recorded to track auditory health and support early detection of hearing concerns in order to facilitate management for our patients.

Newborn Hearing Screening Early Detection

Our specialised newborn hearing tests evaluate hearing ability in infants from birth. Early identification of hearing issues ensures prompt intervention and supports healthy auditory and speech development.

Normal Hearing (Pass)

The newborn consistently reacted to the sound stimuli across all frequencies evaluated, indicating healthy hearing.

Mild Concern

Responses were slightly reduced suggesting some type of mild hearing difficulty. A rescreen or follow-up may provide confirmation of the hearing.

Moderate Hearing Loss (41–55 dB)

May impact language development, articulation, and social interaction. Everyday conversation becomes harder to follow without support.

Moderate-Severe Loss (56–70 dB)

Responses were greatly reduced suggesting some moderate hearing difficulties which would likely impact the child's ability to learn auditory information.

Severe Hearing Loss (71–90 dB)

Affects voice quality and makes normal communication extremely difficult without strong amplification devices.

Profound Hearing Loss

Responses were not detected suggesting profound hearing loss indicating an urgent need for evaluation and the use of hearing aids or cochlear implants.
